Pink Martini, the "little big orchestra" from Portland, are coming to the "Marios Tokas" Municipal Garden Theater on July 14 to treat us to their intoxicating cocktail of classical sounds, Latin, traditional pop and jazz tunes at a dazzling summer party.

The multimember ensemble with the captivating China Forbes on vocals offers something for all musical tastes, which is why they are still one of the best-selling acts on the world music scene.

Each of their performances is a captivating mix of explosive stage presence, classic Hollywood storytelling and rousing rhythms from all corners of the globe, all wrapped in their trademark sophisticated musical atmosphere.

Pink Martini are so versatile that they can hardly be classified into a musical genre. It's jazz, or lounge, or fusion or all at the same time. At the end of the day, they have the secret recipe for the perfect marriage of different genres resulting in their unique musical idiom.

ΒΙΟ

In 1994, Thomas Lauderdale was working as a political aid in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, with aspirations of running for office himself. Like other wannabe politicians in training, he went to every political fundraiser under the sun… but was disappointed with the music he heard at those events. Drawing inspiration from music from around the world – but also from the genres of classical, jazz, and old-fashioned pop – and hoping to appeal to both conservatives and liberals, he founded the "little orchestra" Pink Martini. The orchestra was originally intended to provide beautiful and inclusive musical soundtracks for political fundraising for causes such as human rights, affordable housing, environmental action, library funding, education and parks.

A year later, Lauderdale called China Forbes, a classmate of his from Harvard living in New York, and asked her to join Pink Martini. The rest is history.

Known for their multilingual repertoire that includes songs in 25 languages and having been inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame and the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, Pink Martini are celebrating their 30th anniversary in 2024 with a tour that will stop in Limassol for an enchanting performance at the "Marios Tokas" Municipal Garden Theater on July 14.

The mystical journey of the soul priestess

IMANY and Voodoo Cello, a stirring dialogue between a unique voice and eight cellists, a magical journey from darkness to light guided by the primeval feminine energy.

For Voodoo Cello, the French soul diva covers everything from Madonna, Ed Sheeran and Elton John to Bonnie Tyler and Hozier. The result is a sound that feels spontaneous and raw without being harsh, crystal clear without being pretentious. In her own unique way, IMANY finds the vein of sound that touches us and surprises us, makes us let go and smile, dance or dream.

ΒΙΟ

Nadia Mladjao felt from an early age that she could do anything. She carved a place for herself in a large Comorian family, where she always managed to make her voice heard. She tried her luck as a model in New York before the call of music swept away everything in its path. Then Nadia harnessed her true power and took to the stage as Imany, a name of particular importance, since it means Faith in Swahili.

She released two albums, The Shape of a Broken Heart (2011) and The Wrong Kind of War (2016), which combined soul and folk with unprecedented intensity, while her song "Don't Be So Shy" for the film Sous les Jupes Des Filles, directed by Audrey Dana, became a huge success.

In 2021 came Voodoo Cello. “Since I’ve managed to become a mother without putting aside my work, I decided to stop doubting. To accept the sacred feminine fire as a force to be reckoned with. There’s nothing a woman can’t do.” Voodoo Cello is proof: an album sung, recorded, arranged and produced by Imany herself.

As a public figure, Imany broke the taboos surrounding endometriosis by campaigning alongside ENDOmind, the French Association against Endometriosis. Speaking about her own personal journey with the condition, Imany spoke about the responsibility she has as an artist to use her platform to promote visibility and awareness about lesser-known social issues that mostly concern women.
